Above "The Exhumation of the Mastodon, 1808" by Charles Wilson Peale is an oil painting depicting the first full scale mastodon excavation in Newburgh, New York in 1801. 

In May 2007, the carcass of a female woolly mammoth calf named Lyuba was discovered encased in a layer of permafrost (soil that remains below freezing temperature) near the Yuribei River in Russia, where it had been buried for 37,000 years.
